Abstract

The return of the pri to the presidency of Mexico in 2012 may be explained by the democratic situation or by the performance of the other competing parties, but the behavior of the old party itself played a major role. This paper explores the survival of the pri during its years out of government, its national presence and its activity in state politics. It reveals the dominance of the party, the training of new generations of militants, the emergence of a new internal leadership and its capacity to adapt to the new conditions of electoral competition. The final section reconstructs the profile of the new governing elite, characterized by its origin in local.
