Abstract

After reaching stalemate, the Syrian crisis became more complex than ever. From government repression to popular insurrection, the situation has become one of simultaneous, overlapping conflicts. Together with the civil and religious war, large and medium-sized powers have got involved directly and indirectly in Syria. The course of the conflict has been affected by multiple causes, and the impact of decisions taken by different actors is analyzed. The growing complexity of the conflict brought about a situation in which neither side was able to gain victory. The paper analyzes events with the aim of revealing how the different levels of the conflict are related to each other.
