This paper examines the heterogeneity of the “emerging economies” and their different modes of development. It analyzes the new international division of labor that has arisen as a result of the emergence, strong growth and rapid industrialization of many Asian countries, the moderate growth in Latin America and early the industrialization, and the evolution of wages and working conditions.
It also studies the evolution of poverty and the growing weight of the middle classes and reflects on the future possibilities for these economies. Are the emerging economies on the verge of serious economic difficulties?
