El 8 de julio de 2022, el exprimer ministro de Japón, Abe Shinzō (1954-2022), fue asesinado durante un mitin en la ciudad de Nara. Después de su arresto, el asesino explicó que escogió a Abe como objetivo debido a la relación que la familia de Abe tenía con la Iglesia de la Unificación, asociación religiosa a la cual el asesino culpaba por la bancarrota que su madre había sufrido en 2002.
